Does your workplace need this course?

Under the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, every employer must complete a First Aid Needs Assessment and provide a suitable number of trained first aiders. The level of training depends on your workplace's risk:

  • Higher-risk workplaces — construction, manufacturing, engineering, warehousing, food production, chemical handling — generally need first aiders qualified to full First Aid at Work level.
  • Lower-risk workplaces — offices, shops, gyms — usually only need the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course.

If you're not certain which your business needs, call us on 0113 543 6636 — we'll talk through your setting and point you to the right course. There's no benefit to us in over-selling you a longer course than you need.

Who should attend

This course suits anyone an employer has identified as needing full first aid cover, including: designated and appointed workplace first aiders; site supervisors and managers in higher-risk industries; facilities, warehouse and production staff; and anyone wanting a recognised, comprehensive first aid qualification. No previous first aid experience or qualifications are needed — we start from the basics.

What you'll learn

The course covers the full FAW syllabus:

  • The role and responsibilities of a workplace first aider, and managing an incident safely
  • The primary survey and assessing an unresponsive casualty
  • Adult CPR and safe use of an AED (defibrillator)
  • The recovery position
  • Choking
  • Controlling external bleeding, wounds and treating shock
  • Burns and scalds
  • Fractures, sprains and strains; head and spinal injuries
  • Seizures and epilepsy
  • Anaphylaxis and severe allergic reactions
  • Heart attack, angina and chest pain
  • Stroke, asthma and diabetic emergencies
  • Eye injuries, poisoning and minor injuries
  • First aid equipment, hygiene and record-keeping

What to expect on the day

The course is hands-on and practical — you'll spend far more time practising than sitting and listening. After completing the online element in your own time, you'll join small-group practical sessions where you'll work through realistic scenarios on manikins and with each other, guided by your trainer. The atmosphere is relaxed and supportive; there's no pressure, and you'll get plenty of opportunity to practise CPR, bandaging and casualty assessment until you feel confident. Tea, coffee and a comfortable training room are provided, and there are cafés and shops nearby for lunch.

By the end of the course you'll be able to

Assess an incident and a casualty calmly; perform effective CPR and use a defibrillator; control serious bleeding and treat for shock; manage choking, burns, fractures and head injuries; and recognise and respond to medical emergencies such as heart attack, stroke, seizures and anaphylaxis — all to the standard your workplace needs.

Assessment & certificate

There's no scary written exam to revise for. You're assessed continuously by your trainer throughout the practical sessions, plus short knowledge questions. Almost everyone passes — our trainer's job is to get you there. On successful completion you'll receive the FAIB-accredited Level 3 First Aid at Work certificate, valid for three years. Before it expires, a FAW Refresher renews it for another three years.

On-site training

Need several people trained? We deliver the full course on site at your premises for groups of up to 12, anywhere across Leeds and West Yorkshire. It's usually more cost-effective than booking individual places, removes travel and downtime, and we bring all the equipment — you just provide a room. Call us for a group quote.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any first aid experience to take this course?

No. The course is designed for complete beginners and builds every skill from the ground up.

What's the difference between First Aid at Work and Emergency First Aid at Work?

FAW is the blended qualification for medium- and higher-risk workplaces and covers a much wider range of injuries and conditions. EFAW is a one-day course for lower-risk workplaces. Your first aid needs assessment determines which you need — and we're happy to advise.

How is the course assessed — will I fail?

Assessment is continuous and practical, with short knowledge checks; there's no formal written exam. The vast majority of people pass. Your trainer supports you throughout to make sure you're confident and competent.

How long does the certificate last and what happens when it expires?

Three years. Before it expires you take the FAW Refresher to requalify. If it lapses completely, you may need to retake the full course — call us and we'll check.

Can you train our whole team at our workplace?

Yes — on-site delivery for up to 12 people, across Leeds and West Yorkshire. It's usually the most cost-effective option for teams.

What do I need to bring, and what should I wear?

Just yourself and comfortable clothing — you'll be kneeling on the floor for CPR practice. Everything else is provided.

Can I reschedule if something comes up?

Yes — just give us as much notice as you can and we'll move you to another date. Contact us to discuss rescheduling.

Can my employer pay or be invoiced?

Yes — we can invoice employers for individual or group bookings. Call us to arrange it.

Is the certificate recognised / will my employer accept it?

Yes. It's accredited by FAIB, whose qualifications meet HSE requirements for workplace first aid, and is accepted across the UK.
