Why CPR and defibrillator skills matter

When someone goes into cardiac arrest, early CPR and rapid defibrillation are the two things that most improve their chance of survival — every minute without them reduces it significantly. With more workplaces, gyms and public spaces installing defibrillators, knowing how to use one confidently makes a real difference in those first few minutes before an ambulance arrives.

Who should attend

Workplace first aiders, organisations with a defibrillator on site, gyms and leisure centres, sports and community clubs, and members of the public who want to be ready to help. No experience needed.

What you'll learn

  • Recognising a cardiac arrest and the chain of survival
  • Effective adult CPR (chest compressions and rescue breaths)
  • Safe, confident use of an AED (defibrillator)
  • The recovery position
  • Choking

What to expect on the day

A focused, practical session with lots of hands-on practice on manikins and AED trainers — relaxed, beginner-friendly and confidence-building. You'll leave reassured that you could step in and use a defibrillator if you ever needed to.

We've trained over 5,000 people in life-saving skills across Leeds since 2018.

Our first aid courses are accredited by the First Aid Industry Body (FAIB), whose qualifications meet HSE requirements. Our Level 3 Paediatric First Aid and Mental Health First Aid qualifications are awarded by Qualsafe Awards (Ofqual-regulated), and our CPR & Defibrillator (AED) training is certificated by Skills Training Group. Like the British Red Cross and St John Ambulance, our training meets the standards set by the HSE, Ofsted, the EYFS and the Department for Education.

Your training is led by Martin Sanders — a serving Leeds firefighter and qualified Casualty Care Instructor who brings real front-line emergency experience to every session. Alongside his FAA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work, Martin holds recognised teaching and assessing qualifications, so you learn life-saving skills from someone who both uses them in the field and knows how to teach them. All first aid certificates are valid for three years.
